It seems GoldenCasino.com has become the latest online gambling operator with US facing services to be targeted by US authorities.
Apparently the investigation has its roots way back in July 2008, when members of the Louisiana State Police force opened undercover playing accounts at Golden in order to track how payouts were processed.
Their investigations led them to accounts held in US bank accounts buy Atrium Financial Group (AFG). AFG was found to hold accounts in a number of US banks, including Sovereign, Wachovia , Mercantile, National City Bank and TD Bank North and it is believed these accounts were used to payout winnings to US players. The accounts have now been closed and $365,366 has been seized from at least two accounts by authorities.
Under the terms of the currently in force UIGEA, banks and payment processors in the US are not allowed to facilitate payments related to US resident online gambling activities. Despite this, many casinos and poker rooms still accept US players and offer a variety of deposit and withdrawal methods.
As the US Attorney’s office in Baltimore continues its investigation into the operations of GoldenCasino, the Kentucky Supreme Court continues its deliberations as to whether the State can legally seize the domains of online gambling operators. Meanwhile lawmakers, lead by Barney Frank push on with attempts to have UIGEA repealed and replaced with a more workable, treasure friendly regulatory regime.
