In somewhat of a marketing coupe, William Hill Online has cut a deal to be one of the name sponsors of La Vuelta, one of cycling's premier road races.
The deal will give William Hill Online a great leg up in the race to win the hearts and minds of Spanish online gamblers when the market opens up to offshore operators. Only recently, we reported that authorities in Spain were looking to offer online gambling licenses under a soon to be introduced regulatory regime.
Understandably, a long list of the industry's larger and better known brands, including Victor Chandler and Ladbrokes are jostling for positions in the queue to get access to Spain's largely untapped market of 46 million residents.
La Vuelta, one of the best known cycling road races in the world behind the Tour de France and Italy's Giro, is a marquee event on the Spanish sporting calendar. The race finishes on 20th September in Madrid, Spain.
A spokesperson for William Hill said, "We understand and respect the history of La Vuelta and more particularly the passion that it ignites within the cycling community. The coverage of La Vuelta is far reaching and provides for strong brand visibility across multiple TV networks right across Europe for three solid weeks."
William Hill will be one of three main sponsors of the race, and name sponsor of the sprinters' green jersey competition. Although undisclosed, the cost of deal is believed to be in the order of $400,000.
While cycling teams have been sponsored by gambling/online gambling firms in the past, this will be the first time such an company has been allowed to be the events main sponsor.
