The European Commission has again insisted the US Government change its stance on online gambling.
A report released this Wednesday by the EC, reinforced its stance that current US laws with respect to online gambling are a clear violation of international free trade obligations. If the laws were not addressed, it could seek compensation for lost trade revenues before the World Trade Organization.
The EC also held out an olive branch in the form of statements to the effect that the issue should be resolved via negotiations and a plan to change current laws so that they are consistent with trade obligations, rather than having to go down a litigious path.
The report issued by the EC comes at an interesting time, with the Justice Department only recently re-affirming its hard line stance and freezing the playing accounts of 27,000 US online poker players. While on the other side of the fence, Barney Frank's UIGEA repealing online gambling legislation continues to progress.
