The domain casino.mobi has sold for US$135,000 - believed to be one of the highest prices paid for a .mobi domain.
According to a report in Reuters last week, the deal was brokered by Oversee.net subsidiary Moniker and easily eclipses the marks reached for Tickets.mobi (US$60,000 in 2008), Fun.mobi (US$100,000 in 2007) and RealEstate.mobi (US$85,000 in 2007).
The domain was bought by Infomeda who not surprisingly plan to use the address for a casino portal, including information on terrestrial casinos, reviews of mobile casinos and free play mobile games. Their site has already been soft launched with an official launch planned for later this month.
The sale was described by a Moniker spokesperson as "a very strong sale for both parties in this transaction".
It is also a vote of confidence in the potential of mobile as a gaming delivery mechanism. Still a developing industry, mobile casinos are now starting to gain traction as handset technology allows delivery of a more user-friendly gaming experience to players.
The advent of devises like the iPhone and competing offerings from other manufacturers has made mobile games a far more attractive proposition than they were a mere 5 years ago.
