UTA Cracks Down On Phone Betting

Published 16 Jun 2009 by Rita Malhotra

The Utah Transit Authority has passed an ordinance that will see passengers using its free internet service to access gambling sites fined.

The ordinance, issued in late May, will see those caught using the free wireless internet service available on their Frontrunner commuter trains for gambling shinnanigans slapped with a $300 fine for a first offence. Subsequent citations will cost offenders $500 a pop.

The fines will be handed out by UTA transit police, so if you're on a Utah commuter don't be surprised if transit cops are looking over you shoulder at what you are doing with your mobile phone - which should be an offence in itself.

A UTA spokesperson said that passengers issued with a citation can appeal, and emphasized that use of the free wireless service is subject to UTA terms, conditions and filter.

At least its not as bad as the situation in North Korea. There, commuters (or anyone for that matter) found using a mobile phone are executed. According to a AP report in 2007 such public executions were on the rise.
