Facebook Bans Gambling Adds

Published 18 Dec 2009 by Peter Bowman

The world's largest and most popular social network, Facebook, has updated it advertising policy and prohibited a range of categories, including gambling.

According to a policy announced last week, Facebook will be introducing new advertising guidelines and filters that will see a list of 20 industry categories prohibited from advertising on its network.

The list of banned adds will include firearms, tobacco, pyramid schemes, uncertified pharmaceuticals, content including nudity, a broad filter on inflammatory content and a range of gambling content, 'including without limitation, any online casino, sports books, bingo, or poker.'

With over 300 million registered users, many of them active, Facebook has become a very significant online advertising channel and one which many online marketers have based their strategy around.

What is not yet clear is whether the prohibition will apply just to purchased advertisements in the network or extend to profile pages set up primarily to promote content on the banned list.
