China to Stamp Out Match Fixing

Published 25 Nov 2009 by Milton Shaw

The Chinese government has flagged its intentions to clean up widespread match fixing that is threatening to destroy major football leagues in that country.

According to a report in the The Shanghai Daily, a nationwide investigation into illegal soccer gambling and associated match fixing has been launched.

Already one high profile veteran player, Leng Bo has been arrested in Qingdao and more arrests are likely in coming months.

Meanwhile in Europe, a report in the Telegraph has suggested that the same criminal elements that have been responsible for match fixing in Asian leagues pose a threat to England's Premier league. According to the article, these fixers have contacts within the Premier League.

The report comes hot on the heels of the unfolding European football match fixing scandal believed to involve Champions and Europa League matches.
